IPTV on Shaw.

Shaw — now operating under Rogers ownership — runs the largest cable footprint in Western Canada. The BlueCurve gateway is a competent IPTV pipe, but Shaw's legacy DOCSIS 3.0 areas (still common in suburban communities) cap upload speeds severely, which breaks IPTV's TCP control channel and causes mid-stream stalls.

What works well

Shaw Fibre+ Gig in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver delivers 940 Mbps download / 100 Mbps upload — excellent for IPTV. The BlueCurve modem's Wi-Fi 6 implementation is stable; modern Fire Sticks negotiate 4×4 MU-MIMO without issue.

What breaks

What breaks: legacy Shaw cable areas with 10 Mbps or lower upload, the BlueCurve modem's older firmware versions that mishandle IPv6 PCP, and Shaw's overly enthusiastic parental-control engine that flags IPTV servers as 'unrated streaming sites'.

The reliable fix

On Shaw: check your modem's WAN upload speed via the Shaw portal (anything under 25 Mbps upload will struggle with IPTV TCP control), force IPv4 only on the Fire Stick, and exempt the Fire Stick from Shaw's parental-controls scope.

Common Shaw IPTV issues & fixes

Shaw IPTV stalls every 60 seconds

60-second intervals are diagnostic of TCP keep-alive timeouts. Your upload pipe is constrained — Shaw Fibre+ resolves this; on legacy cable plans, upgrade or run the IPTV through a UDP-based VPN (WireGuard) which sidesteps the TCP keep-alive issue entirely.

Shaw BlueCurve dropping Fire Stick at 3 AM nightly

3 AM is Shaw's scheduled CMTS maintenance window. The modem briefly drops upstream channels; Fire Sticks on Wi-Fi survive it, but Fire Sticks on Ethernet need a static DHCP lease longer than 12 hours.

Shaw IPTV slow only on certain channels

Per-channel slowness on a fast pipe is a CDN routing issue. Your IPTV provider is sending those specific channels through a sub-optimal Shaw peer. Contact your IPTV provider with the exact channel names — a CDN reroute usually solves it in 24 hours.
